I read Grammar of Assent by Newman. I do not know if this stems from that. But I learned truths are truths only until we make it our own by inner assent. It is then we understand something completely, integrated into us. For instance, a phrase like, “You cannot love others until you love yourself.” It was thrown at me often through the years. I knew the words, I understood it intellectually but it took me a long time before I actually experienced it and then knew what they mean.
